I am an introvert and I just find it hard to start conversations. Social interactions drain me and I have to have some me-time to recharge.

Which is quite ironic because my profession as a nurse requires a lot of interactions with different kinds of people.

I find it questionable sometimes how I made it through nursing school and through hospital duties. I feel like the nurse me is not the real me and maybe I’m having a split personality. HAHA. Seriously though, I have come to love my profession, but the introvert me just needs a break from those long draining nursing shifts.

Part of my being an introvert is my inherent shyness that made my school years a big struggle. Could you imagine how on earth I managed to talk to my patients and conduct my assessments? I could just tell you it was some kind of a miracle. What made that miracle?

It was taking action even when fear beats my heart out of my chest.

The most fearful part really is starting. I get a sort of almost paralyzing fear at the start of duty and I get to meet my patients. But finally starting to speak to introduce myself calms my nerves and made me feel at ease in front of the patient.

Assessment is a primary action to do whenever we receive patients. Compiling the patient history requires asking sensitive and personal questions which are just too embarrassing to ask sometimes. These surely scares me too much but after finally asking the first question, I felt more confident to proceed and get the trust of my patient.

So what is my point in this?

Whatever it is that I do that seems too scary or too big or difficult, finally taking action actually takes the fear and increases my confidence in myself little by little.

“Inaction breeds doubt and fear. Action breeds confidence and courage. If you want to conquer fear, do not sit home and think about it. Go out and get busy.”

-Dale Carnegie

Taking that first step makes me feel that I can move to where I want to go.

Asking that first question makes me more knowledgeable and better in crafting good questions to dive deeper.

Finally starting to make a budget and allocate money for my emergency fund makes me more confident in managing my finances.

Everything starts with that first step. And with every step, confidence increases.

“Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence. Inaction is not only the result, but the cause, of fear.”

―Norman Vincent Peale

Thinking will only get you thus far. Action get the wheels running. While I have only really wished before to start living the life I want, taking action to manage my finances made me confident that I will really be able to achieve just that.

Segregating my money in 3 different envelopes for expenses, emergency funds and savings paved the way to make me start building my emergency fund and setting aside money for investments. Tracking my expenses curb my spending appetite and made me stick to my budget and not overspend. Finally creating a blog made me believe in myself that I can accomplish what I set out to do.

And because I took action, I feel more confident each day, despite the occasional setbacks I encountered, that I am getting closer to my goal.

How about you? Do you agree that action makes one feel confident? Have you ever experienced that wherein taking the first step makes you feel confident of success? Please share with us in the comments below. 🙂
